The most fundamental information required for the pavement engineer at the commencement of any project is an assessment of existing pavement condition and associated ground conditions. Allan Bowman & Associates utilises the services of relevant testing laboratories and organisations on a subconsultant basis to undertake this testing as required, thus offering clients a "one stop shop" approach to the delivery of pavement engineering services.

As the need arises, the firm engages appropriately qualified and equipped testing organisations who have state-of-the-art non-destructive testing equipment. For pavement rehabilitation design purposes for example, deflection testing services are typically sourced from road authorities offering this capability so that relevant, detailed and accurate field data is obtained.

At times, it is often desirable to supplement non-destructive field testing by sampling materials from the roadbed or from the subgrade, followed by materials characterisation testing in NATA accredited laboratories.
